Franklin County,
part of the Lakes Region of Vermont, is an enjoyable place to
live, work and play. Thanks to the forbearers and current civic
involvement, locals proudly call it home. There's always something
to do in Franklin County, while you're there check out some
of the local attractions. he
county is made up of the towns of Enosburg Falls, Fairfield,
Highgate, Swanton and St. Albans, and other small towns and
villages.
Fairfield is the location of the President
Chester A. Arthur Historic Site. The site features the
reconstructed home of 21st President with an historical exhibit,
1830 brick church, picnic area, and new interpretive exhibit.
In Swanton, visit the Missisquoi
National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge is 6338 acres, 1
1/2 mile wildlife interpretive trail, and open from daylight
until dark.
The Saint
Albans Historical Museum (on Church & Bishop Streets
in Saint Albans) consists of an 1861 academy building, a Military
Room, Railroad Room; Civil War / St. Albans Raid, and local
exhibits.
In Franklin, Lake
Carmi State Park is a site you don't want to miss. Lake
Carmi, with a 1375 acre surface area, is the fourth largest
natural lake entirely within Vermont. It is 7.5 miles around,
averages about 20 feet deep, and is 33 feet at the deepest
point. The state park includes more than two miles of lake
frontage on the south and east shore of Lake Carmi. There
are 140 tent/trailer sites, 35 lean-to sites, and 2 cabins
that make this the state's largest campground. Rest rooms
have running water and hot showers. There are swimming
beaches in both camp areas, and a day use beach with concession
area, rest rooms, and rental boats.
If you're visiting Vermont during the
summer, don't miss Enosburg Falls celebrating its Annual
Vermont Dairy Festival in June. This Festival has been
going strong since the 1950's! It consists of agricultural
and educational promotion, displays, a parade and entertainment.
Another summer celebration is held
in nearby Swanton in late July or early August. Swanton holds
its Annual
Summer Festival, now going into its 5th decade of summer
fun!
